Last year, Hyundai rolled out the Ioniq 6, a mid-size, all-electric sedan that quickly garnered acclaim, scoring prestigious accolades much like its predecessor, the Ioniq 5. These accolades prompted Hyundai to keep the 2024 model largely identical to the previous year's version, with the notable exception of a reduced Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

Award Winning Hyunda

The 2024 Ioniq 6 was showered with more than a dozen national and international awards in 2023, earning titles such as Electric Vehicle of the Year, Car of the Year, Best in Class, Best Green Car, and Best in Class for large family cars. Despite its Korean manufacturing base excluding it from the US federal tax incentives for electric vehicles, Hyundai has announced a $7,500 price reduction to maintain its competitive edge. For the top-tier 2024 Ioniq 6, the updated MRSP shows a favorable adjustment, with prices $2,450 lower than the previous year's.

The Ioniqu Design

The Ioniq 6 boasts a design reminiscent of European elegance, characterized by its monochrome palette, streamlined flush door handles, downward sloping hood, and LED headlights nestled between active grille shutters. The vehicle stands on 20-inch alloy wheels featuring a distinctive spoke design, while the roof and windshield’s rakish angle sacrifices some rear headroom but adds to its aerodynamic efficiency. Inspired by the aerodynamics of aircraft, including Spitfire winglets on the rear spoiler, the car’s silhouette draws parallels to a peregrine falcon mid-dive. This intricate design achieves an ultralow drag coefficient of 0.21, positioning the Ioniq 6 among the leading EVs in terms of aerodynamic efficiency.

Ioniq Options

With options spanning from SE Standard Range to the luxurious Limited trim—our review model equipped with an extended range and 20-inch wheels—the Ioniq 6 delivers a driving experience characterized by its swift response and grounded handling. This agility is noteworthy for a vehicle of its size, further enhanced by all-wheel drive powered by dual electric motors. The driving experience is refined with a choice of driving modes, excellent regenerative braking feedback, and a suite of safety features that includes surround cameras, adaptive cruise control, and proactive lane assistance.

Hyundai Charging Technology

Hyundai doesn't skimp on charging technology either, boasting ultra-fast charging capabilities from 10% to 80% in under 18 minutes. Inside, the spacious cabin features dual 12.3-inch screens for both the driver's instrumentation and the central entertainment system, with intuitive controls and high-tech inclusions such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and V2L functionality for powering external devices. Despite its generous offerings, the Ioniq 6 competes sternly in its segment against the likes of the Kia E6 and Tesla Model 3, not merely on features but also through an attractive warranty package that includes three years of complimentary maintenance and two years of unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast chargers.

LIKES: Striking design, rapid charging, comprehensive safety features, serene driving experience, robust warranty

DISLIKES: Limited rear headroom, absence of a spare tire (only tire mobility kit provided)

BOTTOM LINE: With Hyundai's strategic price adjustment to offset the absence of US federal EV tax incentives, the Ioniq 6 is poised to solidify its standing in the competitive American market.
