Hyundai has pledged to have its entire fleet electrified by the next seven years starting with its new brand, Genesis. With this year’s all-electric G80 the company’s first EV sedan is already joined the marketplace by electrified Genesis SUVs GV60 and GV70.

Car options

The Hyundai eG80 is currently sold in 15 states with more on the horizon, as Genesis dealers upgrade facilities to handle electric vehicles and modify marketing and servicing strategies ahead of their all-electric vehicle launch in 2025.

The Electrified G80 (or eG80) has a 2023 gas-powered twin G80 that costs roughly $40,000 less in its least expensive trim. Their luxury-laden, high-performance eG80 comes in only one trim – Prestige – with three years of complimentary charging and three years of complimentary dealer maintenance, map care and valet service.

The five-passenger eG80 is a perfect showcase, differing only slightly outside from its gas-powered twin with a G-Matrix patterned grille (with a charging port), 19-inch 20-spoke wheels and a modified rear bumper. There isn’t any EV badging to create neighbor admiration or envy. The sole option for paint was $1,500.

Cabin elegance comes amid premium materials, forged wood trim, under-seat woofers, 21 stainless steel speaker outlets for perfect surround sound, comfortable Nappa leather seats, a 3-D 17.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch, 17-icon dashboard screen controlled with a center spine spindle.

Safety features

The eG80 accelerates briskly and with multi-link suspension front and rear resulting in a smooth ride aided by all-wheel drive and a rear-wheel steering system. The Genesis Highway Driving Assist suite includes live videos of adjacent lanes when turning, a clear heads-up display and other cutting-edge standard safety and driver assistance features. The eG80 has electric motors at the front and rear axles and is powered by a lithium-ion 87.2kWh battery. Which in turn yields compromised cargo space.

Unique bonus features include front seat massaging, voice commands for numerous settings and hands-free remote parking back and forth or perpendicular.

Volkswagen is building a nationwide network of charging stations called Electrify America which offers three years of 30-minute charging free for Genesis, Kia and Hyundai.

Genesis claims the eG80’s 87.2kWh battery can rapid-charge from 10-80% in just 22 minutes. The eG80 charging on a windy, freezing day from 35% to 81% at Electrify America took 26 minutes with 350kW DC fast charging and added 90 miles of range (weather and other factors affect charging times).

Overall review

LIKES: Luxury look, voice recognition, free charging, top safety/tech features,

DISLIKES: No spare tire, smaller cargo area

BOTTOM LINE: eG80 will have strong appeal versus pricier competitors
