1. Buona Caffe, Augusta

Formerly in the newspaper business, the couple who operate this local bean roaster and several cafés began by roasting beans for personal consumption in a hot-air popcorn popper at home. Since then, there has been no turning back, and what started as a hobby has become a full-time career.

The couple opened their first café in 2013, and Buona Caffe has received numerous awards since then, including being selected to roast coffee for the Georgia Governor’s Mansion in 2014. Today, the café has three locations, all popular and each offering classic espresso drinks, specialty flavored lattes and cold brew. Craving a sweet treat? Have an affogato—a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso.

2. Wake Up Coffee Co., St. Simons Island

This Golden Isles coffee roaster has a loyal following, thanks to flawlessly made cortados, matcha lattes and delicious iced coffee. Whether you want to socialize with friends or read, this coffee shop is ready to welcome you. Need a souvenir? Take home some of the stylish branded merch. Also, you can purchase the roastery’s beans online so you can enjoy its delicious coffee at home.

3. Refuge Coffee Co., Clarkston

Every latte or macchiato supports this nonprofit café’s mission to provide job training and personal development opportunities to refugees in one of America’s most diverse communities. The shop has a vibrant, multiethnic atmosphere that makes it a wonderful place to work or relax, and it has an active events calendar of happenings both in the store and in the community.

Refuge Coffee Co. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and accepts donations to continue its mission of supporting immigrants who have come to the area from around the world. The coffee shop has a second location in Atlanta.
