I was recently invited to sail on Royal Caribbean Lines’ Icon of the Seas, dubbed “the world’s largest cruise ship.” At 1,198 feet long—more than three times the length of a football field—this much-buzzed-about ship seems to be on every cruiser’s bucket list. From firsthand experience, I can tell you Icon lives up to the hype. Let me break down what I loved about this record-breaking ship and share some insider tips.
Before my trip, I used Royal Caribbean’s MY RCL App (download at Google Play or Apple App Store) to familiarize myself with the ship’s layout and make reservations for must-do onboard experiences (like seeing the “Wizard of Oz” or dining in the upscale Chops Grille). Icon boasts eight neighborhoods; 40 restaurants, bars and lounges; 18 guest decks; 7 pools; 9 whirlpools; spa; casino; escape room; fitness center; dozens of activities, events and shows; not to mention a dizzying array of additional amenities.
And, thanks to the app, I could check in a week before sailing and complete the health questionnaire within 24 hours of departure. The app also helped shave 20 minutes off the required muster drill. I simply watched the instructional safety videos on my phone, then reported to my assigned muster station for a seconds-long check-in with a crew member.
From family-focused areas to adults-only retreats, Icon truly appeals to all ages with dining and entertainment sprinkled throughout every neighborhood.
As I boarded the Icon, I was immediately awestruck by the Pearl—a jaw-dropping, floor-to-ceiling glass sphere. Serving as a central hub, the two-deck Promenade boasts more than 15 restaurants, bars and lounges pulsing with activity and events—like the lively, colorful parade brought to life by dancers, musicians, and singers. Check the Cruise Compass for daily activities, specials and events.
Insider Tip: As an alternative to the often-busy Starbucks, you can head to Pearl Café (open 24/7) for coffee and delicious to-go options.
Adventure-seekers will love this area! This action-packed section boasts the largest waterpark at sea, with record-breaking water slides. Daredevils can try Crown’s Edge—“part skywalk, part ropes course, part thrill ride”—and learn to surf at FlowRider. Those looking for less of an adrenaline rush can enjoy mini golf, a sports court and a rock-climbing wall.
Insider Tip: Don’t forget to pack closed-toe shoes if you want to try the ziplining experience.
As the ship’s crown jewel, the breathtaking AquaDome is home to Icon’s signature AquaTheater showcasing innovative, buzz-worthy water shows. But is also home to The Overlook featuring wraparound ocean views and Royal Caribbean’s first food hall.
Insider Tip: Many events and activities “sell out” fast (even if they’re free), be sure to reserve your must-do experiences early.
As my favorite part of the Icon, this nature-infused spot provides a quiet respite from all the onboard activity. Meander through winding paths—surrounded by live foliage, colorful murals and eye-catching statues—as you explore shops and eateries. This open-air neighborhood serves as a go-to spot for live music at Lou’s Jazz ‘n Blues and plenty of dining options.
Insider Tip: Grab your favorite drink and relax on a bench as you listen to the melodic bird chirping piped in.
On this three-deck slice of paradise, I discovered four of the ship’s seven pools, with vibes ranging from relaxation to party mode. The live reggae music set the stage for that I’m-on-island-time attitude as I chilled on a lounger with a tropical cocktail from Swim & Tonic, the largest swim-up bar at sea.
Insider Tip:Take a dip in the infinity-edge pool for spectacular oceanfront views.

Insider Tip: Parents will enjoy The Lemon Post bar, the perfect spot to sip a libation (including mocktails) and keep an eye on the kids just steps away.
Perched at the front of the Icon, the spacious Sky and Star Class suites boast a sun deck, private pool, lounge, restaurant and other amenities.
Insider Tip: Though pricey (the most-expensive, three-level Ultimate Family Townhouse goes for $100,000+ per week), these suites provide a more exclusive experience—with some nearly sold out for 2024.
Located at the back of the ship, this adults-only, multi-level section boasts the first suspended infinity pool at sea with stunning 180-degree views, surrounded by a multilevel terrace, whirlpools, a DJ, an extensive bar, plenty of seating, and a fun pool-party vibe.
Insider Tip: Grab a lounge chair to watch the gorgeous sunset from the ship’s stern.
Though I got just a taste of all the Icon of the Seas offers, I found it delivered an unparalleled cruise experience. With seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings from Miami, consider adding an “iconic” adventure to your travel bucket list.
