Virtual Balconies & Portholes

Imagine stepping into the comfort of your interior stateroom and being greeted by a breathtaking ocean vista. Sounds strange but that's exactly what you'll find on Royal Caribbean and Norwegian cruise ships with their innovative “virtual balconies”. The virtual balconies are high-definition screens that extend from floor to ceiling, providing real-time livestreamed views of the ocean and ports of call and even include ambient ocean sounds. (Passengers can control the volume of the sounds or turn them off entirely.) Disney Cruise Line offers a similar technology called "Magical Portholes".

These screens are circular in shape, resembling the classic appearance of traditional ship portholes. In addition to real-time views of the sea, the Magical Portholes feature animated characters from Disney movies swimming by, creating a whimsical and enchanting atmosphere for guests staying in interior cabins. By offering these virtual balconies and Magical Portholes, cruise lines can offer guests a balcony cabin experience without the premium price tag.

Onboard AI

Today, cruise lines are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to elevate both guest experiences and ship operations. Carnival utilizes AI-driven chatbots to offer on-the-go assistance during their voyage. They also have the Guest Smile & Go program that uses a picture taken at check-in to identify guests when they board and exit the ship. The biometric data collected during the cruise is purged after the cruise. Norwegian Cruise Line leverages AI algorithms to analyze guest feedback and preferences, enabling them to tailor onboard activities, dining options and entertainment experiences.

AI is also being utilized for behind-the-scenes operations as well. Holland American Line has adopted AI systems for predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and improving efficiency. Modern staterooms are also upgraded with interactive touch-screen panels that allow guests to control various aspects such as lighting, temperature and entertainment options.

Enhanced Apps & Wearable Technology

Another way cruise lines are using advanced technology is through enhanced mobile apps and wearable devices. Princess Cruises has the MedallionClass experience, which features a free app and a wearable device called a Medallion. This innovative technology pair enables touchless experiences, such as expedited boarding, keyless stateroom entry and the ability to easily locate friends and family on the ship. Via Royal Caribbean's enhanced app, passengers can seamlessly access a wide array of features, simplifying every aspect of their cruise experience.

It can be used as a digital key to open their guest stateroom doors, manage bookings, explore onboard activities and even make reservations for dining and entertainment venues. The app also provides real-time updates and notifications, ensuring travelers stay informed and connected throughout their voyage. These enhanced apps and wearables provide guests with greater convenience and also allows cruise lines get to know their guest preferences, enabling them to offer more personalized services.

Sustainable Power Advancements

As the call for responsible travel grows, cruise lines are not just paying attention, but taking the lead with groundbreaking fuel-efficient power innovations. Princess Cruises newest ships, the Sun Princess and Star Princess, will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and others lines are incorporating hybrid-powered ships and sleeker hull designs to become more efficient. Royal Caribbean has implemented a fleet-wide Advanced Emissions Purification system, minimizing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 98%.
