• The first glimpse of sunrise in the continental United States from atop Cadillac Mountain in Maine’s Acadia National Park (from October to March).

The United States is lined with more than 95,000 miles of shoreline, from sugar-white sandy beaches to rugged, rocky coastlines. The beaches include places to play, explore and simply bask in the sun.

Along the East Coast, beautiful beaches range from the dramatic coast of Maine to South Carolina’s picturesque Kiawah Island (near historic Charleston) to Miami Beach, with its art deco whimsy. Speaking of Florida, the Sunshine State’s 8,000-plus miles of coastline help it live up to its name. Among the highlights: the shark tooth-rich shoreline of Venice Beach and the dazzling Gulf Coast strands of Clearwater Beach and Panama City Beach. Also on the Gulf Coast, Gulf Shores, Alabama, offers white sands, dolphin-watching, deep-sea fishing and parasailing.

The Great Lakes offer their own brand of beach getaway—from the quaint, car-free streets of Michigan’s Mackinac Island in Lake Huron to the towering sand formations of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore along Lake Michigan. Historic sites offer hands-on experiences that bring the past to life. On the East Coast, Boston boasts a Revolutionary history—from the Boston Tea Party to Paul Revere’s midnight ride. Today, visitors can trace the city’s storied past along the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile brick-lined route leading to 16 historic sites.

Philadelphia is the place to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
